Mirror, Mirror: Let My Hero's Voice Be Clearer

You know that little voice in our heads that's always chatting away?

That’s self-talk, and it’s a game-changer for kids (and us grown-ups too!).

Teaching kids to tune into their hero voice—the one that says, “You’ve got this!”—helps them face life's challenges with confidence.

Imagine if a kid like Malala Yousafzai, who stood up for education against all odds, didn’t have a strong hero voice. Her self-talk helped her stay brave!

Science agrees: a 2019 study in Child Development showed kids with positive self-talk handle stress better and bounce back faster.

But it takes practice to make that hero voice louder than the victim (“I can’t do this”) or villain (“You’re not good enough”) voices we all hear sometimes. Let’s help our kids make their hero voice the star of the show!

Connecting the Voices to Fight, Flight, or Freeze

Our brains are wired to react to tough moments with fight, flight, or freeze—those instincts that kick in when things get hard.

My book, Harmony Hare and Her Three Voices links these to the Hero, Victim, and Villain voices. Here’s how to help kids (and yourself!) use self-talk to shine:

Villain Voice = Fight
That mean voice that says, “You’ll mess up” can make kids (or us) want to lash out or push back. If your child is nervous about a school play, ask, “What’s the worst that could happen?” Then flip it: “What would your Hero Voice say instead?” Encourage them to respond with, “I’ll have fun and do my best!” It’s like turning that defensive energy into confident action.

Victim Voice = Flight / Freeze
The victim voice whispers, “This is too hard, I give up.” It makes us want to run away or shut down. When your child says, “I’m bad at this,” help them pause and say, “I’m learning, and that’s okay!” Share a story about a time you wanted to quit but chose to stick with it. It shows them challenges aren’t stop signs—they’re stepping stones.

Hero Voice = Regulated
The Hero Voice is like a cheerleader saying, “Let’s tackle this!” When your child faces a tough math test, help them practice saying, “I can figure this out, one step at a time.” Try it yourself, too—next time you’re stressed, tell yourself, “I’m stronger than this challenge!” The more you use your Hero Voice, the stronger it becomes—just like a muscle.

Fun Challenge: Next time your kid faces something tough, ask, “Which voice is talking right now? How can we make the hero voice louder?” It’s a game-changer!
