In the classroom, I see it all the time—some kids love to tell stories, acting them out with full enthusiasm, while others quietly weave their creativity into drawings, jokes, or even the way they solve problems.

But no matter how they express themselves, storytelling plays a powerful role in helping kids understand who they are.

That’s why this month’s REK Animal is the peacock—a bird that isn’t afraid to stand out and show its colors!

Peacocks remind us that individuality isn’t just about being different—it’s about embracing what makes you, you.

But kids don’t always know what makes them special—until someone else helps them see it. Whether it’s a teacher, a parent, or a friend, sometimes all it takes is one person to notice a child’s gift for them to step into their confidence.

That’s exactly what happened in the real-life story of Mr. Jensen—a teacher who saw something special in a struggling student and changed his life forever. That student, Clint Pulver, went on to become an award-winning speaker and professional drummer, all because one teacher helped him see his potential.

This week, let’s explore three creative ways to help kids find their voice and embrace their individuality—and discover how one small moment of recognition can make all the difference.

Plot Twist: Finding Their Voice

Many believe that confidence comes first—then we express ourselves. But what if it works the other way around?

Storytelling isn’t just about words—it’s how kids discover who they are.

By playing with different ways to express themselves, they build confidence from the inside out. Here’s how:

🔄 Reverse Storytelling – Let your child create the ending. When kids decide what happens next, they’re not just being creative—they’re learning to trust their own choices. Try stopping a story midway and asking, “What would a leader do here?” or “How would someone really imaginative solve this?”

🧭 Identity Mapping – Help them see themselves as the main character. When kids create a character inspired by themselves, they start recognizing their own strengths.
Ask: What makes your character special? What’s their superpower? How do they use it to help others?

👤 Express Without Words – Storytelling is more than talking. Confidence isn’t just about what we say—it’s about how we carry ourselves. Play a “Silent Storytelling” game where they act out emotions and scenes using only body language. Can they show bravery, excitement, or curiosity without speaking?

When kids learn to tell their own stories, they start to see their value in new ways. Give them space to experiment, play, and express themselves—and watch their confidence grow with every new chapter.

Your Inner Hero – March’s Wallpaper

This month, we’re taking inspiration from one of nature’s boldest symbols of individuality—the peacock—reminding us to stand tall, embrace our colors, and own who we are.

💡 Tip: Stay inspired all month with our “Own Your Colors” phone wallpaper—a daily reminder to celebrate your uniqueness with confidence, just like the peacock does.

Simply download the image and set it as your lock screen or wallpaper (just head to your phone’s settings or photo gallery to adjust). Let it be a daily reminder to embrace your individuality and show your true colors with confidence.

Tool: The Confidence Mirror

Sometimes, the way we see ourselves shapes how we show up in the world. A simple yet powerful way to help kids embrace their individuality is by using the Confidence Mirror.

💡 Try This: Each morning, have your child stand in front of a mirror, look themselves in the eye, and say something positive about who they are. It can be as simple as:

“I am creative.”
“I have great ideas.”
“I like who I am.”

This daily practice helps kids build self-awareness, boost confidence, and own their unique strengths—because the most important voice they’ll ever believe is their own.

With St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, we often think about luck—finding four-leaf clovers, chasing rainbows, and hoping for good fortune.

But here’s the truth: your child is already lucky—because they have you.

They have a parent, teacher, or coach who cares about helping them grow, embrace who they are, and step into their confidence.

And the best part? You don’t need to be perfect to make a difference—just showing up, supporting them, and growing alongside them is what truly matters.

So this week, instead of searching for a lucky charm, remember that the best kind of luck is having someone who believes in you. And if you happen to spot a rainbow? Well, that’s just a bonus. 🦄
